Getting outdoors has numerous benefits! While being mindful of the heat, it is equally important to engage in activities that help our physical and mental wellbeing. There are so many advantages to getting a healthy dose of time outdoors. Here are just a few of them:
- Studies show that getting time outside boosts the immune system. Furthermore, scientists believe that the air we breathe outside can be beneficial to us. This is because of the different naturally occurring chemicals that plants release into the atmosphere. It is also cleaner and fresher when compared to indoors, which can be stuffy and polluted.
- In addition, it is a natural way to receive vitamin D, which helps the body fight off different viruses, as well as helps keep our bones strong. This is especially relevant as we age and our bones start to become more brittle. Research suggests that as little as 15 minutes a day in the sun can get you the healthy dose of Vitamin D you need!
- It is an excellent way to get an energy boost! Spending time outside stimulates our different senses and activates our brain cells. As we get older, we start to lose some of our energy. But simply spending time outdoors increases our energy levels significantly! Our brain needs to be active and stimulated. This is particularly important for our senior population.
- It is a natural way to relieve stress and anxiety. It helps us to disconnect from the world briefly and calm our minds. According to Harvard Health: “calming nature sounds and even outdoor silence can lower blood pressure and levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which calms the body’s fight-or-flight response.” This is fundamental for maintaining our health.
- You are more likely to engage in physical activity while outside. It’s no secret that people tend to be less active while indoors. That is why spending more time outside is so beneficial! Between different sports and recreational activities, there are many opportunities to move your body and get active!
- Getting physical activity as well as spending time in nature can greatly improve sleep. While overall studies are limited, there are common underlying factors that contribute to better sleep patterns. Just like we described earlier, the increased brain stimulation, coupled with the calming effects and increased activity, influences our ability to get a good night’s rest.
These are just some of the benefits of getting activity outdoors. So go get a healthy dose of medicine and get outside!
