Lymphatic Drainage

Complete Decongestive Therapy for Lymphedema

The lymphatic system is integral to our health. Its roles in immune response, fluid balance, and absorption of fat are critical to good health. When the system is not working well, protein-rich fluid accumulates in the interstitium, a condition known as lymphedema, creating a perfect environment for infection and impacting a person’s ability to move efficiently. As physical therapists, the ability to improve functional mobility and maintain the integrity of the skin barrier is vital to assisting our patients in achieving their goals.

It is estimated that as many as 5 million Americans have lymphedema, many undiagnosed. That is five times more Americans than the following five diagnoses put together: multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy, and ALS! Common causes of lymphedema are surgery, radiation therapy, CVD and obesity.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) as performed by a certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) is the gold standard in reducing and containing lymphedema. The protocol consists of lymphatic drainage by the CLT, compression bandage wrapping to contain reduction, provision of appropriate compression garments to the client when containment has been achieved, therapeutic exercise and instruction in personal care as a person with lymphedema.

Deb Gangemi, PT is a certified lymphedema therapist, having completed the 135 hours of training through Klose Training, the premier certification school, started by the man who brought CDT to the USA from Germany. Deb has been a PT for 39 years resulting in a wealth of clinical skills and a broad knowledge base that she gladly shares with her patients.

We are currently accepting new lymphedema patients. There is no long waiting list resulting in a postponement of therapy. Most people treated with  lymphatic drainage, CDT per the Klose method see significant results immediately and complete treatment in two weeks. CDT performed by a physical therapist is a covered service under Medicare Part B and many other insurances. We offer in home physical therapy for seniors.
